PCB Piezotronics In-Process Force Measurement System

Retrofitting old machines for in-process force measurement can present many challenges. Some of these include sensor integration, and high production cycle rates. Sometimes the existing sensing system or PLC just can’t respond fast enough for reliable performance. PCB Piezotronics (PCB®) has developed an effective solution for these applications with the new In-Process Force Measurement system, which consists of a Series M240 ICP ® Strain Sensor and Model 410A01 ICP ® signal conditioner, featuring Peak Hold.

The Peak Hold feature of the in-process measurement system allows older PLC systems to stay in synch with high-speed production cycles. The Model 410A01 ICP ® signal conditioner captures and holds the peak reading until a PLC can scan for the value. A simple solid-state relay resets peak hold value, ensuring high reliability force measurement for fast machine cycles.

The simple force measurement solution is intended for use in a wide range of process monitoring and control applications. The system comprised of a bolt on sensor and DIN rail mounted module can be installed and running in a matter of minutes. Its high-resolution analog output (0-5VDC) can be directly correlated to units of force. This system is ideally suited for monitoring and verifying stamping, crimping, press fit, riveting or other assembly force fabrication applications, including material presence and misalignment.

"Tough guy" RLS magnetic rotary encoders a driving technology for steer-by-wire systems

Non-contact solid-state RLS encoders provide frictionless, zero-wear, "fit and forget" reliability: Ideal for positioning control in steer-by-wire systems, solid-state RLS magnetic rotary encoders from Renishaw combine high-performance capabilities with affordability, go anywhere environmental ruggedness, and great application versatility. Selected for by-wire systems in automobiles, off-road vehicles, lift equipment, aircraft, military weapons and marine vessels, the non-contact, solid-state encoders are available in 7-bit to 13-bit models and industry-standard absolute, incremental or linear output formats. The RLS magnetic encoders deliver high-resolution positioning (up to 8,192 count per revolution), speeds to over 60,000 rpm, measurement accuracies to 0.4°, while withstanding temperatures from -40°C to +125°C and high levels of shock, vibration, acceleration, and pressure. Breakthroughs in solid state simplicity, essentially just a magnet and chip, the non-contact designs provide frictionless, zero-wear, low-inertia operation for "fit and forget" reliability, while compact design allows space savings, design flexibility, and ease of integration.

The magnetic encoders provide a “tough guy” alternative where optical angle glass encoders cannot be used due to demanding environmental conditions, plus require half or less the power. Compact sealed versions are also available with protection to IP68 for harsh environments, including immersion applications (e.g., pumps and gearboxes). Two-in-one models feature a backup chip for critical situations requiring redundant capabilities.

Easy to integrate, the RLS magnetic encoders come in component, modular and packaged versions, and absolute or incremental (1,024), analog, linear voltage or linear current output versions. Absolute encoders are available in 7-bit (128 counts per revolution incremental) to 12-bit (4096 count) resolution in parallel or serial data formats, while incremental output options include digital (128 ppr), analog, linear voltage and linear current modes. Supply voltage is either 5V or 24V, depending on encoder/output format. The linear voltage or current output options can be used in traditional potentiometer applications.

Exceptional design flexibility fits a wide range of industries and applications. Designers who require the smallest possible encoder can incorporate encoder components or modular solutions into their own design. Packaged versions are available in non-contact (RM) versions or traditional bearing/shaft reformat (RE).

At the heart of every Renishaw magnetic rotary encoder are two core components — a small diametrically polarized magnet and a custom Hall sensor ASIC which contains an array of Hall effect sensors that generate a voltage when exposed to a magnetic flux field. The Hall sensors detect the change in magnetic flux as the magnet rotates above the ASIC. Through creative design, the ASIC is able to cancel magnetic interference, enabling it to operate in areas of high external magnetic fields and cope with imperfections in the shape of the flux field of the actuating magnetic.

As with all Renishaw’s products, a worldwide application support network and local inventory stocking bring added confidence to system developers.

More Powerful Engines Help Meet Jobsite Demands

Toro’s Z Master® Z500 Series zero turn riders now are available with added power from a 28 hp* Kawasaki® engine. This twin cylinder gas engine (764 cc displacement) on Z Master Z528 and Z558 models offers a step up from the Z500 Series 25 hp Kawasaki engine previously available.

“Professionals tell us they can never have too much power, yet they’re also very concerned about the effects of high fuel prices on operating costs,” comments Edric Funk, product manager for Toro’s Landscape Contractor Equipment. “We believe the Kawasaki 28 hp engine balances the demand for added power with reasonable fuel consumption.”

Along with a more powerful engine, new Z558 models come equipped with Toro’s revolutionary 7-gauge TURBO FORCE ® cutting deck, which includes Toro’s patented adjustable baffle that allows landscape professionals to fine-tune their cutting performance to conquer changing seasons or turf conditions without sacrificing quality or efficiency.

Designed to deliver the ultimate in productivity, the adjustable front baffle is easily moved in a matter of seconds. In long, dense grass or wet conditions, the baffle can be set to the wide open position to increase the discharge opening and achieve faster mowing speeds. In less demanding conditions, the baffle can be closed down to yield micro-sized particles and maximize discharge velocity. When double cutting is unavoidable, setting the baffle to the fully open position allows operators to quickly power through on the first pass significantly faster than with other decks.

The entire fully welded, fabricated shell of the TURBO FORCE deck is constructed of high-strength 7-gauge steel. The Z558 mowers also include the industry’s most durable spindle assemblies, which absorb impact loads and distribute them across a broader area of the robust deck shell. The deck’s “bull-nose” front bumper is designed with a raised leading edge that delivers a crisp, level cut with reduced plowing, plus an integral underskirt that minimizes blowout. To resist flexing and the rapid wear associated with abrasive conditions, ¼” thick, high-strength alloy steel blades come standard.

New Z528 models come equipped with 7-gauge 52” and 60” commercial decks and basic commercial features that make them ideal for contractors requiring a rugged, high-performance, professional-grade mower.

As with all Toro products, the Z528 and Z558 mowers include advanced safety features, such as an adjustable rollover protection system (ROPS), a safety interlock system, and a high-performance rubber discharge chute that allows for close trimming without damaging the chute or landscape structures. Z500 Series optional accessories include Toro DFS Vac and E-Z Vac soft baggers, Toro Recycler® mulching kits, operator-controlled discharge chute, adjustable striping kits, operator sun shades, light kits, the exclusive Toro Z Stand®, and several optional ¼” cutting blades.
