Battery-free Infrared Touch Probe from HEIDENHAIN

For users looking for an alternative to battery-operated touch probes for machining applications, HEIDENHAIN Corporation offers the TS 444 infrared touch probe.  The new TS 444 can be powered by an alternative energy source in the form of compressed air supplied through the spindle of the machine tool, and can be of use with all HEIDENHAIN control systems.

To operate the TS 444 touch probe, compressed air is introduced into the touch probe via the taper shank, and powers a turbine wheel inside the touch probe.   The turbine wheel generates electrical energy through changes in the magnetic field, which is stored in high-power capacitors.

With fully charged capacitors, the touch probe is able to probe for two minutes. The charging time of the TS 444 touch probe varies depending upon the pressure:  The higher the pressure, the shorter the charging time.  A supply pressure of 5 bars or more
is recommended to ensure that charging takes place in a reasonable time.  For example, when a pressure of 5.5 bars is used, it takes around three seconds to completely charge the touch probe.

Like with conventional HEIDENHAIN touch probes, the exit air is used for cleaning the probing point on this TS 444.  This means that at the same time that the touch probe is charged with energy, the probing point is cleaned.  The compressed air does not need to be specially cleaned.

Like other HEIDENHAIN touch probes, the TS 444 features a proven optical sensor technology for generating the trigger signal.  This sensor endures a probing accuracy or ± 5 µm and a repeatability of 2 s ≤ 1 µm.

More information is available by contacting HEIDENHAIN at (847) 490-1191 or HEIDENHAIN CORPORATION, 333 E. State Parkway, Schaumburg, IL  60173.  HEIDENHAIN can also be accessed directly via the web site at www.heidenhain.com or e-mail at info@heidenhain.com.

HEIDENHAIN CORPORATION is the North American subsidiary of DR. JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN GmbH, a leading international manufacturer of precision measurement and control equipment.  Our product line includes linear scales, rotary and angular encoders, digital readouts, digital length gages, CNC controls and machine inspection equipment.

Honeywell Introduces Additional Bipolar Hall-Effect Position Sensors

Honeywell today added low-cost alternatives to its line of standard bipolar Hall-effect sensors. The sensors, often ideal for customers requiring high-volume applications and reduced lead time, offer enhanced sensitivity and operating temperature range as well as a faster output switching time than competitors’ similar offerings.

The SS40F/SS40G Enhanced Low-Cost Bipolar Hall-Effect Position Sensors are designed to provide a level of compensation for magnetic changes over a range of temperatures; the SS41F/SS41G Low-Cost Bipolar Hall-Effect Position Sensors are for general purpose applications.

These miniature, versatile digital Hall-effect devices offer a built-in regulator designed to provide stable operation over a 4.5 Vdc to 24 Vdc supply voltage range. Internal circuitry is designed to prevent sensor damage in case the supply voltage polarity is accidentally reversed. F-suffix versions are factory tested at 25 °C; G-suffix versions are factory tested at 25 °C and 125 °C.

Potential applications include speed and RPM (revolutions per minute) sensing, brushless dc (direct current) motor commutation, motor and fan control, tachometer, counter pickup and flow-rate sensing.

SnowEx Introduces Polyethylene-Constructed, Replaceable Tailgate Spreader

SnowEx Tailgate SpreaderSnowEx, a division of TrynEx International, introduces the new SP-2400 replaceable tailgate spreader. One of the first polyethylene-constructed replaceable tailgate spreaders on the market, the SP-2400 gives winter maintenance professionals a product that makes the most of available fleets by providing a cost-effective solution for year-round dump truck utilization. The poly construction eliminates the maintenance and corrosion concerns that accompany aluminum and steel spreaders, further increasing the cost savings over the life of the unit.

The all-electric SP-2400 works with a vehicle’s 12-volt DC electrical system, making it easily adaptable to a wide range of equipment. A dump truck can be converted in just a few hours for salt/sand spreading. Since electricity runs the truck’s hydraulic actuator, the electric spreader can be installed quickly without hoses, pumps and other hydraulic components. A hydraulic PTO is not required.

An in-cab dual controller allows the operator to regulate the speed of the auger, as well as the spinner speed. The SP-2400 can spread road sand, bulk salt or any combination of sand/salt mixture as far as 30 feet out. A self-leveling spinner assembly stays parallel to the ground as the dump bed rises and lowers, keeping the spread pattern consistently even throughout the application. A SnowEx-patented vibrator/inverted “V” system further maximizes material flow.

The SP-2400 doesn’t incorporate engines, chains, sprockets or pulleys in its construction, significantly reducing any maintenance concerns. An all-steel frame with an electrostatic powder-coat finish resists corrosion. The spreader also is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

For more information regarding the SnowEx SP-2400 replaceable tailgate spreader or the complete line of SnowEx salt and sand spreaders and SweepEx broom attachments, contact TrynEx International, 23455 Regency Park Drive, Warren, MI 48089, call 800-725-8377 or 586-756-6555, fax 586-755-0338 or e-mail info@trynexfactory.com.

Valley Launches Next Gen Trailer Brake Control

Valley Odyssey IINew from Valley is the ultramodern Odyssey II brake controller loaded with special features.

The Odyssey II derives much of its technology from Valley's original Odyssey controller, then goes beyond with an array of exciting enhancements, including a user preset button that allows drivers to save their brake controller settings (Load Level and Output Gain) to one of four memory positions (similar to saving station presets on a radio).

The preset function is particularly convenient when: (1) the vehicle/trailer has multiple operators who prefer slightly different settings; (2) the operator has multiple trailers; (3) the operator tows a trailer that requires different settings when it is loaded/unloaded; (4) the operator encounters any combination of these scenarios.

An exclusive pressure sensitive switch for manual trailer brake activation is also new.  The switch replaces the manual sliding lever common to other controllers.  It allows the operator more finite control over the power being applied to the trailer brakes.  The harder the button is pushed, the more power is applied.

An enhanced display panel has also been designed to support the controller‚s advanced functions.  Four green LED lights indicate the operator‚s preset selections while a segmented LED shows the pressure being applied by the manual braking switch.  And, rather than a rotary knob to control Output Gain adjustments, two separate buttons for Gain Increase (+) and Gain Decrease (-) are now presented.

The new Odyssey II is more compact than the pioneering Odyssey, so it can be easily mounted to more locations inside the vehicle.  It sports an integrated harness connector within its case for added plug-and-play convenience.  A mating harness also is supplied with the controller, as are a custom slide-in mounting bracket, hardware and easy-to-follow installation instructions.  A 30-amp circuit breaker, (purchased separately) may be required for some vehicles.

Inherent to the new controller are technologies that made Valley's original Odyssey popular among trailer operators, including patented dual-axis accelerometer technology that continually recognizes varying road terrain changes and senses the vehicle's rate of deceleration to apply the correct amount of braking force at precise intervals for a smooth and seamless stop.

Designed for light- to heavy-duty applications (one to four axle trailers) with 2, 4, 6 or 8 brake systems, the Odyssey II features four easily adjustable power level settings.  Each level increases the initial power curve to the trailer brakes, making the controller fully adjustable for progressively heavier loads.

The Odyssey II also incorporates polarity protection in that the control will not be destroyed in the event the power and ground wires are connected backwards.  The unit creates no output interference with vehicle electrical systems, cruise control systems or anti-lock brakes.

The new Odyssey II is backed by a limited lifetime warranty and can be purchased at leading automotive parts and retail stores including Napa Auto, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Carquest Auto Parts and U-Haul locations.  To find a Valley dealer in your area, visit the company online at www.valley.us.com and select the 'Where to Buy' link (or call 800.344.3112).
