Deere Rolls Out Two New Wheeled Excavators

John Deere Construction & Forestry has introduced two new wheeled excavators, the 190D W and the 220D W, featuring Tier 3-certified engines and significant increases in horsepower, weight and digging forces over their predecessors.

Deere Excavator 190D W

Both units have fuel-efficient 5.2-L diesel engines rated at 159 hp, with the 190D W weighing in at 44,974 lbs. and the 220D W at 51,368 lbs. when both are equipped with two-piece booms and front and rear outriggers. In addition to its heavier operating weight, the 220D W has a greater dig depth at 20 feet, 8 inches, and more digging forces. The 190D W and 220D W are also available with mono booms for long-distance work and blades for backfilling.

“Whether your job calls for the 19- or 22-metric-ton machine, you can drive from site to site quickly, with a maximum speed topping 23 mph and a lot more maneuverability than a tracked excavator,” said Mark Wall excavator product marketing manager for John Deere. “The 190D W and 220D W are highly productive in digging ditches, repairing streets and sewers or moving Jersey barriers.”

On the 220D W, wider axles and the additional weight provide more stability and lift capability for quickly moving Jersey barriers.

Power and Control

The 190D W and 220D W have Deere’s exclusive Powerwise III™ engine/hydraulic management system that maximizes engine output and delivers smooth, predictable multi-function operation while saving fuel. One work mode makes it easy to be productive in any application. The two-speed Powershift™ transmission shifts smoothly on the go from low to high. Downshifing isn’t a problem either since the transmission will only shift within certain travel-speed parameters – protecting both the operator and the drivetrain.

Generous hydraulic flow and best-in-class metering ensure powerful digging force, precise low-effort control and superb multi-function operation. Quick, responsive pump activation eliminates any delay in functions.

An intuitive, multi-language LCD monitor provides a wealth of information, including pump flow adjustment, maintenance tracking, onboard diagnostics and service monitoring.

Comfortable Cab

Both units have a best-in-class cab with substantially more legroom, noticeably lower noise levels and ergonomic low-effort controls to fight fatigue and enhance productivity.

The deluxe-suspension multi-position seat slides together with the control console or independently, ensuring operators can find a comfortable position. The tilt steering wheel is infinitely adjustable for more comfortable operation and it angles up and out of the way for easy entry and exit.

Visibility is improved, too, as a wider expanse of right-hand window glass combined with narrower front cab post and front steering console provide virtually unobstructed all-around visibility. The overhead tinted window hatch is also larger, improving visibility to any obstacles overhead.

Changing hydraulic flow is easy when you use the LCD monitor to observe the flow. You can accommodate a variety of attachment needs, right from the seat.  Also, joystick controllers come pre-fitted for auxiliary controls, so it’s easy and inexpensive to add auxiliary hydraulics. The units come standard with low-flow medium-pressure assist hydraulics for operating thumbs, rotators or tilt buckets.

A high-efficiency cooling fan, noise-suppression muffler and isochronous high-idle speed all work to keep the operator’s environment quiet. Silicone-filled mounts effectively isolate operators from noise and vibration.

The cab also features the creature comforts you’re used to from John Deere, including an AM/FM radio, an automatic, high-capacity climate-control system, and a convenient 12-volt port for cell phone charging. There’s also a space for a lunch box, cup holders, and even a hot/cold box that keeps refreshments at the right temperature.

Dependability and Serviceability

John Deere wheeled excavators retain all the dependability and serviceability features of their D-Series siblings for maximum uptime and low daily operating costs.

Rigid, reinforced D-channel side frames resist impacts, providing maximum cab and component protection. Welded bulkheads within the boom resist torsional stress for long-term durability. Heavy-duty covers on the oversize outriggers help protect the hydraulic cylinders from damage.

Tungsten-carbide coating creates an extremely wear-resistant surface to protect the bucket-to-arm joint. Powdered metal oil-impregnated bushings enhance durability and extend grease intervals to 500 hours for the arm-and-boom joint and 100 hours for the bucket joint. Reinforced resin thrust plates increase lube intervals to 500 hours.

Large service doors provide wide-open access to daily checkpoints. Easy-access, remote-mount oil and fuel filters can be changed without crawling under the machine or removing access panels, reducing service time. Extended service intervals let you work longer – and earn more – between changes.

Genie Introduces New Model of Its Popular
S™-80 And S™-85 Telescopic Booms

To optimize value in terms of greater uptime and cost of ownership, Genie Industries today introduced newly redesigned versions of its popular S™-80 and S™-85 telescopic booms. The significant changes on the S™-80 and S™-85 booms include: fixed width axles; an exclusive virtual pivot boom assembly; faster elevation time; improved software design for smoother, more comfortable operation; and intuitive operator and serviceability features.

“The new design of the S™-80 and S™-85 was adapted from our high-selling S™-60 and S™-65 telescopic booms,” said Phil Harvey, booms product manager for Genie Industries. “We’re convinced that operators will experience greater ease of use and owners will appreciate the enhanced serviceability features, which ultimately maximize uptime and minimize cost of ownership.”

The fixed width axles on the redesigned S™-80 and S™-85 booms give the machines an 8’2” total width both on the trailer and on the jobsite. They can be easily transported over the road without a special permit on a standard equipment trailer. Because the axles are fixed, the boom is ready to drive right off the trailer, maximizing productivity at the job site. The fixed axle system improves the machine’s durability and efficiency, as serviceability is easier and less costly by having fewer hydraulic components and moving parts.

New to the S™-80 and S™-85 telescopic booms is the exclusive virtual pivot boom design which Genie Industries introduced in 2003 on the S™-60 and S™-65 booms. The primary benefit of a virtual pivot boom is its ability to keep the weight of the boom over the chassis’ center of gravity as it elevates. This eliminates the need for extra counterweight and keeps the overall weight of the machine down for better use in more sensitive terrains.

To enhance operator efficiency, the elevation time on the S™-80 and S™85, from fully stowed to fully elevated, is significantly decreased to 68 seconds. An improved control system with boom angle sensors gives operators a comfortable feel with smooth action, especially at the top height of elevation. The only 80 foot boom in the industry with a patented active oscillating axle, it provides better traction in rough terrain for a smoother ride for the operator. Redesigned control box labels on both the top and bottom panels of the boom provide an intuitive interface for operators.

Other significant updates on the S™-80 and S™-85 further enhance the machine’s serviceability and maintenance. The former shotgun style cylinder boom assembly has been replaced with a single cylinder and sequencing cable system, the same assembly on the S™-60/S™-65 booms that is lighter weight and less costly to repair. Many of the hydraulic hoses on the swing chassis have been replaced with hard lines that provide consistent routing, longer life and easier maintenance.

Komatsu America PC88MR-8 Hydraulic Excavator

Komatsu America Corp. (KAC) announces the PC88MR-8 mid-sized hydraulic excavator designed to bring increased production and added operator comfort to contractors in a wide variety of construction, utility, landscaping and other excavating applications.  The eight ton class (8.4 metric tons) unit bridges the gap between “compact” and “construction” -sized units.

The PC88MR-8 is equipped with the latest KOMTRAXTM technology which sends machine operating information to a secure website utilizing wireless technology.  Real-time data including machine operating hours, machine location and fuel levels are relayed to the web application for customer viewing and analysis.

Key features of the new PC88MR-8 include:

Enhanced comfort and ease of operation

The PC88MR-8 is a member of the short-swing radius family, meaning the operator can focus on the work in front and worry less about rear swing impact in confined areas.  It accomplishes these tasks while maintaining its high lifting capacity and stability.   The X- frame undercarriage provides superior strength and helps prevents mud and debris build-up, saving the operator valuable time when cleaning the machine.

The all new cab is the same used on Komatsu’s larger units and features a standard automatic climate control system, pilot-proportional joystick controls with auxiliary hydraulics control on the right joystick and a 7-inch color monitor for easy viewing of machine functions and monitoring systems.

Every PC88MR-8 is also equipped with a control pattern change valve so the operator can choose either “backhoe” style or “excavator” style controls to match his personal preference.

Power And Performance

The PC88MR-8 gets it power from a Komatsu Tier 3, 65HP diesel engine, which has an increase of 17 percent more power than the prior model PC78MR-6.   It also features increased drawbar pull, faster travel speed, 10 percent more arm digging force and a significant improvement in dozer blade travel to enhance grading and backfill operations.

The PC88MR-8 has an operating weight of 18,558 pounds and features a maximum digging depth of 15 ft. 2 in., with a maximum reach of 23 ft. 5 in.  The standard auxiliary hydraulic system flow of 33 GPM can be easily changed from single direction flow to bi-directional flow to provide superior hydraulic attachment productivity.

Value

The PC88MR-8 is packed with high-value, construction excavator features like X-Frame undercarriage, just like Komatsu’s larger models.  It features the very same cab with viscous isolation mounts and an instrument package with money-saving features like auto-idle, and an “eco” gauge that tells the operator if he’s operating at maximum fuel efficiency.  There are also five working modes to match hydraulic power to the job, thereby increasing fuel economy further.  It also offers the choice of four track systems; rubber track, two steel grouser systems and the Komatsu Road-Liner track system, ideal for use on multiple surfaces.

Service And Maintenance

To simplify maintenance, Komatsu equipped the PC88MR-3 with numerous features. Daily inspections are enhanced by the incorporation of wide opening compartments to allow access to the engine, cooling system, hydraulic valve settings, air cleaner, coolant and windshield washer bottles.   In addition, maintenance intervals, including lubrication, have been extended to 500 hours—effectively lowering cost of ownership.

Peace of Mind

Every PC88MR-8 is backed by a Komatsu 3 year/3000 hour warranty.  It’s also loaded with standard features that enhance job site security like lockable compartments with single key access, travel alarm, neutral engine start system and ROPS protection.
