Sherborne Sensors New A545 Series Solid State Linear Accelerometers

A545 series accelerometers
A545 series accelerometers

Sherborne Sensors, a global leader in the design, manufacture and supply of inclinometers, accelerometers, force transducers, load cells, rotary encoders, instrumentation and accessories for industrial, military and aerospace customers, has introduced the A545 series, a range of single, biaxial and triaxial solid state linear accelerometers, designed to measure acceleration and deceleration within demanding environments, and within the same, compact package size.

Available in ranges from ±2 to ±500g, A545 series accelerometers feature an advanced MEMS sensor, incorporating air damping. Unlike fluid-damped devices, air damping is essentially independent of temperature, which enables the transducer to reliably perform over a wide temperature range. Sensors are fully compensated for temperature effects on both sensitivity and zero, and incorporate positive mechanical stops. Housed within a robust, lightweight, (less than 40 gm), durable light alloy package with solder pin connectors, the A545 series confers excellent shock resistance, and provides reliable over-ranging protection. The A545 series is designed to operate from an unregulated DC power source and have useable frequency responses from DC to several kHz.

Typical applications for the A545 series include data acquisition systems, crash testing, fatigue life monitoring and prediction, low-frequency vibration analysis, and structural surveying. Custom designed units can also be manufactured and tested to conform to specific requirements. All A545 series accelerometers are 100% tested and calibrated at the factory prior to shipment, and are accompanied by a two-year comprehensive warranty. A545 accelerometers are also part of the new Sherborne Sensors Guaranteed On-Time Delivery program.

Diversified Products Introduces Bundle Lifter to Simplify Conductor Support

HEIDENHAIN's safety-oriented position encoders

Diversified Products introduces a Bundle Lifter, providing power line and electric utility crews with a faster and more efficient solution for removing, supporting and reconnecting insulator strings during energized work. The bundle lifter enhances safety while optimizing the utilization of equipment and personnel.

For applications involving bundles held by a yoke plate, the bundle lifter offers linemen the advantage of maintaining the plate in an upright position, rather than having to straighten it up using hot sticks. By making it faster and easier to reconnect the plate to an insulator string, the bundle lifter saves time for line crews while also greatly diminishing lineman fatigue.

Field-tested and approved by transmission and distribution maintenance professionals, the bundle lifter is constructed of high strength steel and 10-foot clear span fiberglass. For optimal maneuverability and safety, the unit is designed to allow ample clearance above a crossarm while avoiding interference with an insulator string. Weighing 125 pounds, the lifter has a load capacity of 3,500 pounds and is rated to 240 kV.

Standard features of the bundle lifter include a pivoting gate that retains the yoke plate within the lifter, as well as an attachment point for linemen to guide the lifter with hot sticks.

A lineman for a major electrical utility company conceived of the idea for the bundle lifter, and the product concept was further developed by actual line crews in the field.

Diversified Products designs, engineers and manufactures a full line of utility products, including line lifters, insulated work platforms, man baskets and pole pullers. Honda Introduces All-New Large GX and iGX Engines Series

Honda has introduced an all-new generation of its versatile and reliable GX and iGX series of general purpose engines at the 2010 World of Concrete show in Las Vegas. The new generation GX Series, Honda’s legendary family of commercial grade engines, brings improvements in power, fuel efficiency, emissions performance and quiet operation to the already popular engine line.

Featuring four all-new models, the large GX engine line combines increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope.  The new GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390 engine models are overhead valve (OHV) horizontal shaft engines that offer users durable power for a wide range of demanding commercial, construction and rental applications.

In addition to the new GX series, Honda is expanding its iGX series with an all- new iGX340 and iGX390 engine.  The iGX series offers further enhancements to the GX series, incorporating an electronic self tuning regulator (STR) governor.  Similar to GX, iGX engines are also (OHV) horizontal shaft engines, yet provide additional advanced technologies for more complex applications.

“Our new GX and iGX series of engines have been redesigned to provide more power and excellent fuel efficiency while reducing emissions and noise,” said Scott Conner, assistant vice president, Honda Engines.  “The new GX and iGX bring an enhanced level of value and performance to our customers.”

Potential applications for the large GX series of engines include:

  • Commercial Concrete Equipment
  • Commercial Generators
  • Water pumps
  • Trenchers
  • Chippers/shredders
  • Air compressors
  • Stump grinders
  • Pressure washers
  • Aerial lifts and platforms

The new large GX series of engines features a host of technologies and design elements that allow for improved power output.  The new GX models produce 6 percent more power than previous models, making them among the most powerful engines in each of their respective categories.  This additional power is achieved via an advanced combustion chamber design, the implementation of Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing, and an increased compression ratio.

Along with improved power, the new GX series of engines provides a significant reduction in noise and vibration, which is vital to end users of both commercial and residential engine applications.  Noise has been reduced up to 5 decibels, making the new GX one of the quietest engines available in its class.  A new reed-style breather valve and a new muffler design also contribute to the engine’s quiet operation, while a new light weight piston allows an optimized overbalance ratio for less operating vibration.

Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new GX family of engines has been significantly improved for 2010.  The new large GX engines increase fuel efficiency by 12 percent.  In addition to increased fuel efficiency, the new GX engines will meet the 2011 EPA exhaust emission regulations without the use of a catalyst.

The all-new iGX engine series features an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) using Honda STR governor technology.  A long life multi layer gradient density-type air filter extends the air cleaner maintenance interval by 50 percent.  Premium features such as an electronically controlled governor, fully automatic choke and an automotive style electric starter are standard on the iGX series engines.

Potential new applications and attributes of this technology include:

  • pressure washers that automatically respond to the load when the user squeezes or releases the trigger handle;
  • water pumps that can be automatically activated by a remote switch based on water level;
  • generators that can automatically respond to load and adjust engine speed based on electrical draw.
  • drive-by-wire applications, including utility vehicles, scissor lifts, ride-on trowels and other remotely operated products.

Honda is the world’s preeminent engine maker, selling more than 24 million units globally in 2008 through a diverse array of automotive, motorcycle, and power equipment products.  Honda engines are characterized by the same quiet and fuel-efficient technology that is behind the company’s reputation for premium quality.

Honda Power Equipment, a division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., markets a complete range of outdoor power equipment, including outboard marine engines, general purpose engines, generators, lawnmowers, pumps, snowblowers, tillers and trimmers for commercial, rental and residential applications. Its comprehensive product line consists exclusively of 4-stroke engines.

Meggitt Sensing Systems Introduces Ultra-Thin Absolute Pressure Transducer for Surface Air Flow Measurements

Endevco® model 8515CMeggitt Sensing Systems, a division of Meggitt PLC, and a leading supplier of high-reliability sensing and monitoring systems for physical parameter measurements in extreme environments, has announced the debut of Endevco® model 8515C, a miniature, high-sensitivity piezoresistive pressure transducer, designed for surface air flow and other aerodynamic measurements requiring high output in a small, lightweight package.

The ultra-low profile design of Endevco® model 8515C has an overall thickness of 0.030 inch (0.76mm) and diameter of 0.250 inch (6.3mm). Units are available in ranges of 15 and 50 psia, with 200 mV full scale output, and frequency responses of 180 kHz and 320 kHz, respectively. The transducers offer stable performance over an temperature operating range of -65 to +250°F (-54 to +121°C), with combined non-linearity, non-repeatability and pressure hysteresis error of less than 0.50% FSO. In addition, model 8515C is designed to survive 10,000 g shock and 10,000 g acceleration, with minimum 5X burst pressure, making it the best performing pressure transducer of its kind in the industry.

Model 8515C is supplied with an integral cable, and is typically surface mounted onto curved surfaces, for minimal effect on laminar air or hot gas flow.  A flush mounted fit may also be achieved by recessing both transducer and lead wires into the mounting surface, while using a supplied protective screen to prevent particular impingement. For airflow smoothing requirements within flight test applications, an optional rubber fairing is available. Modified versions of model 8515C are also available for wider temperature compensation. All units are shipped in special electrostatic discharge (ESD) packaging, for added protection during product shipment and handling.

Because of its uniquely high overload capability, high frequency response, very low base strain sensitivity and excellent temperature performance, model 8515C is ideally suited for small-scale wind tunnel testing models, helicopter or turbine blade surface pressure measurements, as well as aerodynamic surface measurements required during flight test.
