Komatsu America Corp. Demonstrates Its “Green”
Hybrid PC200LC-8 Excavator

Late in 2009, Komatsu America introduced the first of ten Hybrid PC200LC-8 excavators into the U.S. market to test the innovative equipment that was designed to reduce environmental impact by saving fuel and reducing green house emissions. On March 11, 2010, representatives from Komatsu, along with representatives from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the office of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the contractor Griffith Company, and Savala Equipment Company, Inc.—which has been using a Hybrid PC200LC-8—gathered for a demonstration of the hybrid excavator at work at the Port of Los Angeles.

The Komatsu hybrid excavator is one of a number of other kinds of “green” machines that the Port of Los Angeles has introduced or tested, resulting in reduced diesel emissions that comply with a Clean Air Action Plan that was adopted in November 2006 by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

“We're really in the process of seeing a complete transformation of this port as well as the trucking and construction industries," noted Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board. "We're actually cleaning the air one piece of equipment at a time, and the machine being showcased today and others are going to help us meet our goals of energy efficiency and diversification of the fuel supply."

Brea-based contractor Griffith Company has seen positive results with the Hybrid PC200LC-8. Dan McGrew, VP of Business Development for the Griffith Company said that they were skeptical at first, but the hybrid excavator “surpassed all expectations while using 30% less fuel.” McGrew noted that the hybrid excavator has a shorter cycle time than a conventional excavator, and concluded, that Komatsu’s Hybrid PC200LC-8 is a “fantastic machine.”

There are 700 of Komatsu's hybrid excavators already in use at construction sites in China and Japan. "Komatsu's decision to apply its engineering excellence to the largest construction machine segment clearly signals our commitment to developing environment-friendly equipment," said Dave Grzelak, chairman and CEO of Komatsu America Corp.

Powered by the Komatsu Hybrid System, the Hybrid PC200LC-8 uses a newly developed electric swing motor, power generator motor, capacitor and diesel engine. Komatsu developed its revolutionary hybrid system to work on the principle of swing energy regeneration and energy storage using the Komatsu Ultra Capacitor system.  Komatsu’s Ultra Capacitors provide fast energy storage and instantaneous power transmission.

In tests comparing the standard PC200LC-8 hydraulic excavator to the Hybrid PC200LC-8, the hybrid model reduced fuel consumption by approximately 25-40%, depending on the application.

Komatsu America Corp. is a U.S. subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd. which is the world’s second largest manufacturer and supplier of construction, mining and compact construction equipment. Komatsu America also serves forklift and forestry markets. Through its distributor network, Komatsu offers a state-of-the-art parts and service program to support the equipment. Versalift Becomes OEM Data Delivery Distributor

OEM Data Delivery (“OEM DD”), a developer of technology tools for managing worksites and high-value equipment, and Versalift East, a leading manufacturer of aerial devices and trailers, have announced an alliance designed to benefit buyers of aerial equipment who want GPS capabilities as part of their equipment package.  The alliance calls for Versalift to distribute, and install as part of its manufacturing process, the OEM DD ST-900 Service Tracker.

The ST-900 is a compact, powerful tracking instrument designed for heavy service environments.  It captures detailed work and idle hour logs, and provides a proven way to manage high-value assets, monitor equipment activity, and prevent theft. It is wireless, paperless and “hands-free.” The ST-900 is a versatile, economical alternative to traditional GPS devices.  It is unique in that it provides true cellular capabilities without the high fees that typically accompany cellular devices.

The announcement was made jointly today, by Sam Simons, Director of Business Development for OEM DD and Keith Joseph, President of Versalift East.

Says Mr. Joseph, “we believe we’ve gained an important competitive advantage with this integrated program.  Our customers want cellular capability, but often balk at the exorbitant ongoing fees. The ST-900 gives them the information and tracking capabilities they want, without the monthly sticker shock.”

The ST-900 offers the additional benefit of tracking PTO (Power Take-Off), so that credits can be obtained quickly for fuel used at the worksite, as opposed to on-highway.  All states, and Washington D.C, allow substantial tax rebates for PTO operation if properly documented.

Versalift will provide single-source responsibility for the ST-900; both companies will assist with worker training, which typically requires just a few hours.

The ST-900 Service Tracker received the Construction Equipment “Top 100 Products Award” for 2009.

Tennant Company’s ec-H2O Technology

Tennant Company (NYSE: TNC), a world leader in designing, manufacturing and marketing solutions that help create a cleaner, safer world, today announces that its breakthrough ec-H2O™ technology is now available on the Company’s largest industrial rider scrubbers and scrubber-sweepers. ec-H2O converts plain tap water into a powerful cleaning agent without any added chemicals.

Tennant Company’s ec-H2O technology was originally introduced in late 2007 on the Tennant T3, T5 and 5680/5700 and Nobles Speed Scrubâ walk-behind automatic scrubbers. Throughout 2009, Tennant Company extended ec-H2O technology to the Tennant T7 Micro-Rider, T15 Mid-Sized Scrubber, 7300 Mid-Sized Battery-Powered Scrubber, 7100 Micro-Rider Scrubber, and 8300 Battery-Powered Scrubber-Sweeper as well as the Nobles Speed Scrub Rider. With the extension of ec-H2O to the Tennant T20 Rider Scrubber and M20 and M30 Rider Scrubber-Sweepers, commercial customers in retail, hospitality, education and healthcare as well as industrial customers in manufacturing, warehousing, aviation, and food and beverage can reap the performance, value and safety benefits of chemical-free cleaning. Customers of Tennant’s rider scrubbers and scrubber-sweepers can enjoy additional benefits, including significantly higher productivity and chemical cost savings as well as a faster return-on-investment with the addition of ec-H2O technology on these larger machines.

“We are very proud to offer our customers a complete portfolio of scrubbers and scrubber-sweepers that allows them to maintain their facilities with the most environmentally sound and fiscally responsible cleaning technology available,” said Chris Killingstad, president and CEO with Tennant Company.

ec-H2O technology, developed by Tennant researchers and engineers and named by R&D Magazine as one of the most technologically significant developments in 2008, helps to meet the ever-growing need for sustainable cleaning. ec-H2O technology delivers proven cleaning results without the negative environmental and health concerns associated with producing, packaging, transporting, using and disposing of traditional cleaning chemicals. The technology begins as water and ends as water, so it can be handled and disposed of easily and safely; it uses 70 percent less water than traditional cleaning methods, which increases scrub time up to three times per tank; it leaves behind no slippery detergent residue on the floor; and it releases no used detergent discharge into water systems. Eliminating the need for chemical additives enhances worker safety and reduces costs for purchasing and disposal of chemicals.
