Terex Introduces Its New 30-Ton Articulated
Truck to North America
The new Terex® TA300 articulated truck delivers rugged and reliable productivity. Boasting the highest horsepower and torque in its class, the TA300, which replaces the TA30, is the only 30-ton hauler that comes standard with a fully independent front suspension (IFS) system.
“Everything about the new TA300 has been carefully considered to increase productivity levels and enhance operator comfort,” says Ken Emmett, product manager, Terex Construction Americas. “From the new ergonomic cab and oil-cooled disc brakes — to the standard independent front suspension system, exceptional fuel economy and highest torque and power in its class, it’s all designed with our customers’ needs in mind.”
The TA300 provides the highest power and torque in the 30-ton articulated truck class, boasting a 385-hp, Tier 3-compliant Cummins diesel engine, a ZF fully automatic with manual override transmission and a maximum torque of 1,309 lb ft at 1,400 rpm. This performance, coupled with the 100 percent differential locking action, enables the TA300 to tackle the most challenging grades and extreme site conditions with ease. The maneuverability and tractive effort means the truck is well suited to such diverse applications as quarrying, mining, construction and road maintenance.
The IFS system helps to ensure a smooth ride when traveling over rough terrain, making it easier to handle and increasing productivity. In addition to achieving quicker haul cycles, shock loads and vibrations are also lessened, increasing component life, enhancing operator comfort and reducing driver fatigue.
The 22.9-yd3 capacity body can be tailored to maximize production and durability through options such as liner plates, side extensions and a tailgate. “With a maximum payload of 30 tons and a body dump cycle time of 20 seconds,” says Emmett, “customers will benefit from low cost-per-ton per hour when moving material.”
Another important feature of the TA300 — and all Terex® articulated haulers — is the oil-cooled multiple-disc brakes on each axle, which provide extended brake component life, reduce service intervals and operating costs and improve overall braking performance in comparison to traditional dry-disc brake systems fitted as standard by other leading manufacturers. Service brake life is further increased by the use of a Jacobs® compression-release engine brake for retardation. A hydraulic transmission retarder is available as an option.
The TA300 also has a new ergonomic cab designed to provide operators comfort and control. Control positions and instrument groupings have been arranged according to operator feedback. The cab also benefits from reduced interior noise levels, an improved steering wheel, more effective air conditioning, a high-quality sound system and new mirrors. Interior aesthetics have been updated to anthracite grey with a matte finish to reduce glare and improve durability.
Maintenance is simple to perform on the TA300. From the wide opening angle of the hood to ground level access to the major components, every consideration has been given to servicing the TA300. Mechanics can easily complete under-hood service thanks to the wide platforms on both sides of the engine.

Kubota Reminds Operators to Double-Up on Safety
for National Safety Month
According to the National Agriculture Tractor Safety Initiative, research shows that, when used together, Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) and seatbelts are 98 percent effective in preventing tractor-related injuries and deaths. A ROPS and fastened seat belt help to provide a safety zone that may reduce the chance of serious injury or death in the case of a rollover accident. June is the National Safety Council’s Safety Month, and Kubota Tractor Corporation reminds all equipment users to always make time for safety when operating equipment.
“The best advice for operators relative to ROPS and seat belts is to put 'em on, keep 'em on,” says Greg Embury, vice president of sales and marketing, Kubota Tractor Corporation. “National Safety Month provides us with an important reminder to use the safety features on equipment consistently and to pay close attention to all safety practices before using tractors, lawn and garden equipment, construction equipment and utility vehicles, too.”
Retrofit Older Tractors with ROPS and Seatbelt
An alarming number of fatal farm accidents and injuries occur every year, with overturned tractors accounting for nearly fifty percent of the tractor fatalities. Sadly, the extent of these injuries and fatalities may have been lessened with the use of ROPS and fastened seatbelts.
Kubota has provided ROPS as standard equipment since 1985. Older models that do not have a ROPS can be retrofitted; in fact, Kubota offers a ROPS program to equip older model tractors with a ROPS and seat belt. As part of Kubota’s continued effort to promote the installation and use of a ROPS and seat belt, Kubota Tractor Corporation is offering a special price for a ROPS and seat belt safety system through its nationwide network of dealers. Kubota tractor owners can visit www.kubota.com/safety for more information and to check eligibility. To date, Kubota dealers throughout the country have installed more than 11,500 ROPS retrofits.
Kubota supports safety education for its customers and their families by sponsoring the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day™ educational program, part of an effort designed to make safety education and training available for children year-round. Now in its 16th year, the program will conduct more than 385 Safety Day events in 2010 across the United States and Canada. In 2009, the programs reached more than 89,500 children and adults in rural communities, and to date, has touched the lives of more than 825,000 participants.
Additional information about Kubota’s support of the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day education program, along with safety information including Kubota’s “Ten Commandments of Tractor Safety,” a safety podcast, and a downloadable tractor safety coloring book can be found at the Kubota Web site: www.kubota.com.
“Safety should be top-of-mind for people who have been operating equipment for years, as well as those just learning,” says Embury.
Kubota Tractor Corporation, Torrance, Calif., is the U.S. marketer and distributor of Kubota-branded equipment, including a complete line of tractors up to 118 PTO hp, performance-matched implements, compact and utility-class construction equipment, consumer lawn and garden equipment, commercial turf products and utility vehicles. A World First for Continental Industrial Tires - ContiRT20 Performance
After an accelerated (18-month) engineering, development, and testing program, the industrial tires business unit of Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (“Continental”) has added an entirely new product to its portfolio. The ContiRT20 Performance, a premium pneumatic radial industrial tire, is designed with special features that reduce punctures, flats and heat buildup. Continental unveiled this tire in size 12.00 R 20 at bauma, the construction machines and equipment expo in Munich, Germany on April 19.
The new ContiRT20 Performance meets extremely high requirements of longer life expectancy, less downtime and greater stability, said Martin Burdorf, director of Continental’s industrial tires business unit – The Americas. Many companies that handle lumber, block, brick, pipe and steel are willing to pay a premium to switch from bias-ply tires to Continental’s industrial radials— particularly for their larger forklifts. But while Continental industrial radials consistently satisfy these demands for fewer flats and longer, cooler operation, market conditions now demand that industrial tires provide even greater puncture resistance, increased lateral stability and greater potential for retreading. The ContiRT20 Performance meets all of these demands and has been engineered to achieve up to 30 percent greater life expectancy than its predecessors, Burdorf said.
“In just looking at the tread pattern design, you can see that the ContiRT20 Performance provides excellent traction characteristics. It’s also been designed to wear evenly with an overall stronger carcass. But to satisfy our customers, this tire makes absolutely no compromises in stationary stability for heavy loads or protection against stone trapping, which can damage the tire and cause premature removal,” Burdorf said.
Heavier-duty tread blocks, wide, flat-belt construction, reinforced steel beads, stiffened, more impact-resistant sidewalls, and a wider, abrasion-resistant tread are just some of the impressive design features of the ContiRT20 Performance. The tread depth of this tire was increased to the maximum to ensure the longest possible service life, even under arduous conditions. The tread pattern design, featuring wide grooves, provides reliable traction on both surfaced and unsurfaced ground.
Continental also designed this tire to meet environmental requirements, with an advanced low rolling resistance tread compound, which reduces energy and fuel consumption. The tire’s strength and high performance reserves will also allow for longer lifetimes and greater retreadability, which reduce waste from premature replacement of tires.
Since September 2008 the new product has undergone scrutiny according to the full set of tire testing rules, including comparing the tire's performance against its competitors, said Burdorf. Continental’s developers and testing engineers took into account the heavy stress that industrial tires endure under various conditions including wood, steel and cement industries; shipyards, logistic centers, airport and seaport operations; and indoor and outdoor applications.
“We literally subjected hundreds of ContiRT20 Performance radial tires to extensive, real-world testing against our competitors’ tires, at multiple end-user locations around the world including ports, lumber yards, concrete pipe yards, and paper mills,” said Phil Lannon, U.S. sales manager for Continental’s industrial tire business unit. “After these extensive tests against the competition, we truly believe that the ContiRT20 Performance is the best industrial radial tire available today, hands down.”
This tire line is available in 13 sizes with Speed Index A5 (25 km/h - 16 mph). Production began in April and further sizes may be introduced as the market demands, the company said. The ContiRT20 Performance can be installed with either a tube and flap, or with Continental’s TSR (Tubeless Sealing Ring) which guards against rapid deflation in the event of a tread or sidewall puncture.

Honeywell's Xyr6000 Wireless Position Sensor Enables Monitoring in Hazardous Areas and Remote Locations
Honeywell's XYR6000 Wireless Position Sensor is based on one of the company's most-proven sensor technologies. The XYR6000 position sensor helps improve overall reliability by giving users the ability to remotely monitor a number of applications ranging from valve position to safety shower emergency use.
Originally introduced by Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) in June 2009, the XYR6000's broad spectrum of potential is now being offered by Honeywell Sensing and Control to targeted OEM customers.
Based on the MICRO SWITCH™ CX hazardous area switch, the XYR6000 Wireless Position Sensor monitors position when used in conjunction with OneWireless™ systems, sending the signal from remote or potentially hazardous areas. Featuring full UL, ATEX, and IEC Ex approvals, the XYR6000 Series has calibration within 270 degrees rotation to apply in most linear and/or rotary position sensing applications. Its analog output provides true position span output in both percentages and degrees.
In addition to eliminating manual monitoring, the sensor's accuracy improves safety by identifying linear or rotary valve positions, minimizing the risk of unwanted fluid release or unplanned product contamination. When used for safety shower notification, the sensor can serve as an emergency response trigger. The XYR6000 Wireless Position Sensor also simplifies maintenance by electronically tagging each valve in the system by identifying valves that have degraded or been damaged. This reduces the need for field technicians to manually inspect valves for maintenance.
Since the sensor carries all the appropriate hazardous location certifications, it is often ideal for applications such as monitoring valve position status, manual process valve position, safety shower and eye bath notification, tank overflow alarms, damper and louver position, gate/door position, and other applications where installing wires is inefficient, cost prohibitive, or simply unsafe.
